Mushroom growing, paper making workshops offered
One Island Sustainable Living Center is offering opportunities to learn about mushroom growing and paper making.
A forest gardening and grow-your-own mushrooms workshop will be held Oct. 27 at One Island in Honaunau. Forest Garden Design and Practicum with Steve Sakala will be held 10 a.m. to noon; bring a potluck lunch item. A mushroom workshop with Zach Mermel will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Workshop fee is $40 plus a $25 materials fee for a take-home mushroom log and kit. Register by Monday to ensure a kit.
A tour of Hamakua Mushroom Farm in Laupahoehoe will be held at 11:15 a.m. Nov. 8. The tour is $10, lunch is $15. Sign up by Nov. 4.
A grow-your-own mushrooms workshop with Zach Mermel will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Nov. 17 at Iole in Kapaau. Workshop fee is $40 plus a $25 materials fee for a take home mushroom. Sign up by Nov. 4.
Participants in sustainable paper making classes will learn to turn locally grown banana, kukui and even coffee beans into paper. The class is taught by artist-in-residence Susan O’Malley from 2 to 6 p.m. Oct. 19 at One Island’s teaching space on a ranch in Kapaau. A materials preparation option takes place 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Workshop fee is $25 plus a $20 materials fee.
The class is also offered at One Island’s farm in Honaunau. Optional plant materials preparation is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 23 and the paper making workshop is 2 to 6 p.m. that day. An overnight camping option is available with another paper making class offered 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 24.
Workshop fee is $25 plus a $20 materials fee. An additional $35 fee covers the camp out and Nov. 24 class. Register by Nov. 16.

Forest restoration workshop planned
Botanist Tim Tunison will lead “Backyard Forest Restoration” from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village.
Workshop participants will learn how to develop and maintain a restored or recreated native forest. The day begins within the Niaulani Rain Forest, which VAC has been restoring since 1996.
Attendees will carpool to Tunison’s backyard, which he is in the early stages of restoring to native rain forest habitat.
A brief demonstration on how to begin a simple propagation project completes the day. Students take home a supplemental CD. Tuition is $15. Advance registration is required by calling VAC at 967-8222.
Refuge open house canceled by shutdown
The 21st annual open house event scheduled for Oct. 19 at Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge has been halted by the government shutdown.
Because of continuing lapse in appropriations, all U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lands, including all national wildlife refuges, including Hakalau Forest and Kona Forest Units, remain closed for the duration of the federal government shutdown.
